We won!

OK, let me relate to you whatever happened yesterday on the 25th of June. It can be classified as one of SMI's most wonderful victory. Siddarth, Izharul and I took part in the National Science Quiz (Kuiz Sains Nasional) on the 23rd of April, and unexpectedly we got through the first round and were shortlisted to the second round which was held yesterday. The quiz yesterday was for the state level.

The quiz was held at SMK Bukit Merchu in Kuala Kangsar. We left SMI at 7.15 a.m. (Mr. Yee fetched us there together with Mrs. Yee, of course) and while on our journey there, we never stopped discussing about anything that has something to do with Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics included) and Technology. When it comes to Chemistry, Mrs. Yee volunteered so much information in such a detailed manner that understanding her points became so easy.

A 45-minute drive is actually quite long, but we felt as if it were only 15 minutes before Mrs. Yee said, "OK, we've arrived already." All of us were like, "What? So fast?" Well, it turned out to be that we were the first team to arrive. Other teams from Anderson, MCKK and ACS Sitiawan arrived later, but ACS Sitiawan naturally arrived the latest as their journey is farther.

The quiz was scheduled to begin at 9.50 a.m. but the VIPs and the question papers arrived so late that we began at around 10.30! This quiz is in aural form, and is divided into two segments. In the first round, each participant from every team was given 3 questions to answer within 20 seconds for each question. If you get the answer right, you get 20 points, otherwise your question will not even be given to the other teams or your other teammates. Each team must answer 9 questions. Therefore, there are 36 questions to be answered. There are three LCD projectors and the screen at first will show the question numbers from 1 to 36. Participants were to choose their numbers to answer certain questions.

At first, Anderson, SMI and MCKK tied in the first round with 40 points whereas ACS Sitiawan scored 60 points (they'd got such EASY questions like: "The SI unit to measure electric current is Ampere, what is the SI unit used to measure heat?"). Then in the second round, each team was given 3 questions to answer within 30 seconds per question. This time, teams are allowed to discuss among themselves for an answer and any one of the members of the team can answer. Anderson and MCKK could not answer any of the questions, ACS Sitiawan answered one question correctly and we could answer two out of the three questions! Thus the results were:

Anderson - 40 points
MCKK - 40 points
ACS Sitiawan - 90 points
SMI - 100 points

That was close! Mrs. Yee was praying so hard that we could answer the last question so that we would be on the lead. We did, eventually, and we stole the lead.

MCKK and Anderson had a tie, so they had to go for the tie-breaker to determine the 2nd and 3rd runners-up. Eventually, Anderson won the 2nd runner-up placing.

According to Mrs. Yee, Anderson had previously got to the State-level Finals three times and SMI only twice (meaning this is the third time we made it to the State-level Finals). SMI never won the State Finals and this time we became STATE CHAMPIONS! Hurray!

The next round will be in Perlis. Groan! Why must it be so far? The next round will be the Zone level, if we win, we will represent the Northern Zone to enter the National Level. We have much reading to do!

Anyway, we did it! And we will do it again.
